Paper Topic

I am going to write about the "government control" in WE.  How the Benefactor is the all powerful god of the One State and controls people by removing parts of their brains.  It is really the start of Dictatorship.  I will talk about how little freedom the people of the One State had and how that, for the most part, kept them from rebelling.

Ending of WE

I think that the ending of WE is why it is not in a Canon.  It was so boring, I was expecting a little more to happen.  There was not enough action in D-503 getting his head worked on and him believing that the One State is all perfect again.  Over all WE was not too bad of a book, but I hated the ending.

Why "One State" would suck

I really hate how in the One State people are not allowed to love.  Love is what I believe holds this world together.  Without love people have no connection to each other.  People should be able to have love and make families in WE.  Love is the center of very powerful things.  It is better to love and lost, the to not have known love at all.

Reader-Response Strategies

Reader-Response Strategies can be included on any piece of literature.  Critics use the information from other people who read the book to make other books better.  Critics do not look at a book as being complete, instead they see it as the reader piecing together a puzzle as they read the story.  This can be applied to WE because the readers get more and more information as the story progresses and are constantly trying to figure out where the book is leading them.

Comparing Literature to WE

Style - In the book WE, style plays a big part in how D-503 writes to us.  D-503 often times does not complete his sentences he just ends them in the middle.  This leaves us, the readers, to try to fill in the blanks with our imaginations.  This also gives the story much more suspense and leaves many guessing.

Tone - This book has many tones depending on who's perspective you are looking at.  D-503 seems to be confused a lot of the time, where as I-330 seems very confident in herself.

Irony - I think that there is a little irony in the fact that D-503, in the beginning of the novel, is really confident in himself and the One State, but as the book goes on he becomes less and less confident in himself and I predict he may become less confident in the One State as well.

Plot - I believe the plot of this story is to show us the so called "perfect world," but in reality I think we will find that it is not so perfect.

Characterization - This story is told in a diary form so then it feels like the narrater, D-503, seems real.

Setting - The setting is in the One State, a place in the future where everything in a persons daily life is scheduled to the T.  In this place there in only one god and they call him the Benefactor.  This world is supposed to be superior to todays world but I'm not so convinced.

Point of view - This story is written in 1st person point of view and read like a diary.

Symbol - I think that the teeth of I-330 is a symbol because she has sharp teeth like many predators do and she is praying on D-503.  Also the elderly lady at the entrance to the Ancient House is Mother Earth because she had things growing from her.

Theme - I think that the theme of this story is going to be that we can not truly have a Utopia for everyone.  One person's utopia my be another person's hell on Earth.  Plus there will always be rebels in society trying to break free of the strict hold that the laws put on them.
